FOCUS Favourites May 2018


Do not despair if you were not invited the the Royal Wedding this month. We have compiled an exciting list of things to do in London and the UK for the month of May thay will make you forget of the missed invite!

2 May

In Honour to the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki's 85th birthday, Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the London Philharmonie Orchestra to perform the second violin concert, which he has dedicated to her. "The Metamorphoses requires my best technical skills and give me tremendous musical fulfilment." Enjoy the evening at the Royal Festival Hall.

3-6 May

An amazing opportunity to buy original prints from international dealers, galleries and print publishers take place at the Royal Academy of Arts. Now in it's 33 year the LOPF presents prints from across five centuries. View a wide range of different styles from the earliest woodcut of Albrecht Duerer to the newest prints available on the market.

5-7 May

Since 1983 London biggest waterway festival takes place at Little Venice. Organised by Inland Waterway Association this unique boat gathering will provide activities for the whole family. Join this free event on the first weeked of May and enjoy trade shows, live music, Morris Dancers, a real ale bar and a wide range of food to satisy your appetite.

5-7 may

Perfect for any hip hop lovers this annual three day international festival of dance theatre is back in London. Curated by hip hop theatre pioneer Jonzi D "Breaking convention" will celebrate it's 15th year with incredible performances from around the world. The acts takes over the whole Sadler's Well space with dance workshops, graffiti, DJs and freestyle sessions all over the building.

9-13 May

Set in the beautiful private grounds of Windsor castle, the horse show hosts a various range of disciplines that include Show Jumping, Dressage, The Land Rover International Driving Grand Prix as well as a variety of showing classes. You have the opportunity to join the UK’s largest outdoor premier show in an relaxed environment with either a Day or Evening Package. There are exciting displays which take place at the show, a shopping area and many places to sit and eat.

13 May

Puppeteers from all over the country are coming together to celebrate the anniversary of the first sighting of Mr Punch in England by Samuel Pepys’ show in Covent Garden in 1662. The annual Covent Garden Festival is great for all Punch and Judy fans of all ages. Spend the afternoon watching puppet, music and dance performances.

14th - 16th May

An annual science festival that takes place every May and brings researchers to your local pub to present their scientific discoveries. Over 500 events in 32 cities in the UK.
Events are for the public, you don't need any prior knowledge, and this is your chance to meet the people responsible for the future of science (and have a pint with them).

16th - 19th May

UK-wide festival of Lates in museums and galleries. A fantastic opportunity for discover museums and galleries in new and exciting ways – perhaps discovering a cultural gem on your doorstep that you didn’t even know existed.

19th and 28th May

Just five miles north of Brighton, offers stunning panoramas, a record breaking valley, a curious history and England’s most colourful habitat. In addition to walking, cycling, kite flying and enjoying the breathtaking landscapes you can participate in their activities like basket making (19th May) or pizza making (28th May).

26 May

Have fun and raise money in the 5k or 10k Race for Life event, which takes place in the picturesque Regent's Park. The single lap course is for women only, raising money for research for more than 200 types of cancer. The race is suitable for runners all abilities. Choose to run, jog or walk! It is all about uniting in the fight against cancer. Children are welcomed.

Hertfordshire

Now that the days are getting warmer visit the Henry Moore studios and sculpture gardens in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, less than 30 miles from central London. Explore Henry Moore's fascinating method of "direct carving" out of a block of stone or wood. The exhibition concentrates on a selection of 30 sculptures from 1920-1980. Stroll through the gardens on a sunny day and have a unforgettable day out with the whole family.

Organised with the Musee Rodin in Paris this summer exhibition is about Rodin's passion for the sculpture and ancient Greece. The show presents some of Rodin's most famous sculptures like "The Kiss" and "The Thinker" next to the ancient work that inspired him on a visit to London in 1881, the British Museum's Parthenon.


Combine the exhibition with an introduction from the curator Celeste Frage at the theatre of the British Museum. There are still tickets available for May.
