Go ahead and ask!

Over the weekend I was reminded that you never know who you might meet! While attending a baby shower at Queens Ice and Bowl I got chatting to one of the other guests. I had seen said person at the rink time and again, but we only ever chatted about axels and sit spins.

I have lost so many of my American habits that in all the times we had had these casual exchanges I had never once asked him what he did. As it turns out there is just so much you can talk about when celebrating a mom to be. Me, being long past those baby days, and he, finding himself slightly out of his comfort zone at what was not surprisingly a predominately female occasion, took solace in changing the subject from birth to work. Who knew those four simple words 'What do you do' would lead to such synergies!
I was surprised and delighted to learn that this aquaintance is a career coach who not only can land an axel, but is an accomplished author with several published books on confidence, interviewing and recruitment, and is regularly invited to speak on TV and radio. You can imagine my excitement!
Turning up to a baby shower on a Sunday afternoon with my mind on overdrive as I mentally prepared for the week ahead I never expected to meet a career coach whose work I found so interesting and relevant to so many members of the FOCUS community. I left the baby shower as delighted about this new connection as I was for the amazing mom to be!
Keep your eyes and ears open and be willing to ask what do you do? You never know who you might meet!
Our Career Networing Evening on the 18th May will hopefully result in many, many connections like mine at the rink.
Watch this space to see if Rob comes to FOCUS to inspire us all!
